Thanks to the many library supporters who worked tirelessly on our behalf, the library’s budget for the new fiscal year was reduced less than expected. The Jacksonville City Council voted on Sept. 27, 2011 to restore $1.7 million to our budget. That means:
- All locations will be open on Mondays.
- The Maxville Branch will not be closed.
- No library employee will be demoted or told that he or she no longer has a job.
While the cut was less than expected, it is still a reduction of $1.3 million. To accommodate this reduction, service hours at some locations have been reduced and vacant positions will not be filled. The library owes a large debt of gratitude to the many Friends groups, library customers and supporters in our community who have advocated to reverse the budget cuts. The library also greatly appreciates the many supporters on the City Council for their work. Thank you for loving your library!
I am so thankful that common sense prevailed in the decision to not cut librarians during this economic disaster, specifically because information is key to the public remaining free while learning that responsibility is the major force in liberty. So many people depend on this vast resource of learning located for convenience for all citizens. I remember receiving my library card in Baton Rouge, Louisiana and I honor it as I am certain so many other people do.
